Details for messenger / hormone: persephin

EndoNet ID: ENH00379

To link to the content of EndoNet use the EndoNet ID that is given on the detail pages in the format ENX0000, where X is a place holder for the type of the component (e. g. R for receptor or C for anatomical structure).
As URL for the linking append this ID to the detail page for this type of component.
For an hormone that would be:

http://endonet.bioinf.med.uni-goettingen.de/hormone/ENH00000

It is also possible to use the search of EndoNet to link to the right detail page. The URL should look like

http://endonet.bioinf.med.uni-goettingen.de/search/ENC00000
If the search pattern is unambigious the user is directed to the corresponding detail page.

General information

  • Persephin supports the survival of motor neurons in culture and in vivo after sciatic nerve axotomy and, like GDNF, promotes ureteric bud branching. [1]
  • Exhibits neurotrophic activity on mesencephalic dopaminergic and motor neurons. [2]
  • GFRalpha4 is the ligand-binding subunit required together with RET for PSPN signaling. [3]
  • GFR alpha-4 and the tyrosine kinase Ret form a functional receptor complex for persephin. [4]
  • Persephin, member of the transforming growth factor-beta superfamily and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor subfamily, is distributed throughout the nervous system at extremely low levels and is thought to function as a survival factor for midbrain dopaminergic and spinal motor neurons in vivo. [5]
  • Persephin is a neurotrophic factor similar to GDNF and NTN but using additional, or different, receptor components. [1]
