General information

  • Member of the Wnt5a class (cannot induce secondary body axis formation in Xenopus), which binds Fzd to activate heterotrimeric G proteins and increase intracellular calcium levels or induce Rho-dependent changes in the actin cytoskeleton. [1]
  • All Wnts contain 23-24 cysteine residues. [1]
  • Optimal Wnt signaling also requires association with glycosaminoglycans (e.g. heparin sulfate and chondroitin sulfate) in the extracellular matrix. [1]
  • Wnt5a acts through noncanonical Wnt signaling to promote angiogenesis. [2]
  • IL6, secreted from epithelial cells or macrophages, induces WNT5A upregulation in mesenchymal cells. [3]
  • Wnt5a regulates Shh and Fgf10 signaling during lung development. [4]
  • Wnt5a signaling induces proliferation and survival of endothelial cells in vitro and expression of MMP-1 and Tie-2. [2]
  • The Wnt receptor Ryk is required for Wnt5a-mediated axon guidance on the contralateral side of the corpus callosum. [5]
