General information

  • Galectin-3 binds to Helicobacter pylori O-antigen and is upregulated and rapidly secreted by gastric epithelial cells in response to H. pylori adhesion. [1]
  • The endogenous human tumor-associated galectin-3 (hL-31) is a functional molecule which acts as a receptor for ligands containing poly-N-acetyllactosamine sequences. [2]
  • Galectin-3, once externalized, is a powerful modulator of cellular adhesion and spreading in breast carcinoma cells. [3]
  • Galectin-3 is a beta-galactoside-binding protein that is secreted from many cells although the protein lacks a signal sequence for transfer into the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi compartments and entry into classical secretory pathways. [4]
  • Seems to display an anti-apoptotic activity. [5]
  • Ser6 phosphorylation acts as a molecular switch for galectin-3 cell translocation from the cytoplasm and, as a result, regulates the anti-apoptotic activity of galectin-3. [5]
  • Gal-3 binding to its cell surface receptors CD7 and CD29 results in activation of mitochondrial apoptosis events including cytochrome c release and caspase-3 activation, but not caspase-8 activation. [6]
  • Galactose-specific lectin which binds IgE. May mediate with the alpha-3, beta-1 integrin the stimulation by CSPG4 of endothelial cells migration. [7]
  • Galectin-3 overexpression is associated with an increased cell surface expression of alpha6beta1 integrin (leading to an enhanced adhesion to extracellular matrix proteins), with an increase in the levels of alpha7beta1 integrin expression, a process which is linked to protection from apoptosis. [5]
