Details for messenger / hormone: galectin-7

EndoNet ID: ENH00741

To link to the content of EndoNet use the EndoNet ID that is given on the detail pages in the format ENX0000, where X is a place holder for the type of the component (e. g. R for receptor or C for anatomical structure).
As URL for the linking append this ID to the detail page for this type of component.
For an hormone that would be:

http://endonet.bioinf.med.uni-goettingen.de/hormone/ENH00000

It is also possible to use the search of EndoNet to link to the right detail page. The URL should look like

http://endonet.bioinf.med.uni-goettingen.de/search/ENC00000
If the search pattern is unambigious the user is directed to the corresponding detail page.

General information

  • Galectin-7 modulates the aggressive behavior of lymphoma cells by controlling the expression of metastatic genes, such as MMP-9. [1]
  • May be involved in cancer cell migration.
  • Existing as monomer.
  • Galectin-7 overexpression is associated with the apoptotic process in UVB-induced sunburn keratinocytes. [2]
  • Retinoic acid reduces the amount of galectin-7, but does not eliminate it. [3]
  • Galectin-7 is strikingly down-regulated in SV40 transformed keratinocytes. [4]
  • Galectin-7 expression causes enhanced caspase-3 activity and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase cleavage, and the potentation of apoptosis by galectin-7 is completely abrogated by a caspase inhibitor. [3]
  • Galectin-7 is partially externalized to the medium by keratinocytes although it has no typical secretion signal peptide. [4]
  • GAL7 tends to display pro-apoptotic effects. [3]
  • Galectin-7, designated as the product of the p53-induced gene 1 (PIG1), is a regulator of apoptosis through JNK activation and mitochondrial cytochrome c release. [3]
